This national real estate database which is the first source of Canadian Real Estate Buyers and Sellers has been improved and is now better than ever and user friendly.
Real estate agents are now required to ask for proof of the identity of all buyers or sellers involved in a Canadian real estate transaction. If the client is a corporation, that information must include corporate documentation, and the names of the corporation directors. They must also ascertain if a third party is involved in the transaction.
This also applies if a buyer or seller involved in a transaction is not represented by a real estate agent, but the other individual involved is represented. Those buying or selling privately will be asked by the agent representing the other party involved in the transaction to provide proof of identity as well, and that record must be kept by the real estate agent involved in the transaction.
These new regulations are part of federal legislation (Bill C-25) passed in 2007 that requires a number of industries, including real estate, to do more to help stop money laundering and terrorist financing. The regulations are enforced by the federal agency known as the Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada, or FINTRAC.

In the 2007 Ontario Economic Outlook and Fiscal Review, the government proposed to expand the Land Transfer Tax Refund Program to include first-time homebuyers of resale homes for agreements of purchase and sale entered into after Dec. 13, 2007.
This measure was included in Bill 44, Budget Measures and Interim Appropriation Act, 2008, and, having received Royal Assent on May 14, 2008, is now law.
As a result of this change, first-time homebuyers of resale homes may now be able to receive a refund from the provincial government of up to $2,000 of the land transfer tax paid.
Effective December 14th , first-time buyers of resale homes, as well as newly constructed homes, would be eligible for a refund from the provincial government of up to $2,000 of the Land Transfer Tax paid.
The expanded Land Transfer Tax Refund Program for First-time Homebuyers is part of a package of new tax initiatives announced in the 2007 Fall Economic Outlook and Fiscal Review that would provide $1.4 billion in provincial tax relief for business and people over three years. The government is making strategic investments in people, communities and infrastructure to strengthen Ontario’s economic advantage and help manufacturers and other sectors challenged by current economic conditions.

According to the article Where to Buy Now, in the May 2008 edition of Moneysense Magazine, Barrie's economic outlook is outstanding. Each of Canada's 35 major cities was ranked for their appeal to real estate investors.
The market was analyzed by value, momentum and economic strength. Each city was assigned a letter grade in each of the three categories as well as an overall grade. Barrie was the only city to score an A+ in the economic strength category.
While no cities were awarded an overall A grade, Barrie falls within the top seven cities that were awarded an overall A-, ranked behind Regina, Saskatoon and Winnipeg.
